Lunch in Muswell Hill: Our French Set Lunch Explained

Two courses for £16.95, served every day on Muswell Hill Broadway.

Steak frites served at La Petite Colline

Our set lunch at a glance

Our set lunch, le déjeuner, is served every day from 12pm to 5pm. It is £16.95 for 2 courses or £18.95 for 3 courses, with £2 extra at weekends and on bank holidays. Fancy just a main? That is £13.95.

What to order

Start with French onion soup, lobster bisque, escargots or our chicken liver pâté. For mains, choose from croque monsieur, moules frites, smoked haddock fishcake, roast chicken, calf’s liver or a sirloin minute steak with Café de Paris sauce.

Finish with crème brûlée, a warm chocolate crêpe or lemon sorbet with raspberry coulis.

Buckwheat galettes

Galettes are savoury pancakes from Brittany made with buckwheat flour. La Bretonne is filled with mushrooms, melted cheddar and caramelised red onions. La Méridionale comes with ratatouille and burrata. Both are vegetarian and served with a fresh salad.

Great for a quick lunch or a long one

Meeting a friend, taking a client out or treating yourself on a day off? Our lunch works for a quick bite or a long, lazy afternoon with a bottle of wine. One recent guest told us on OpenTable that the lunchtime menu was great value with lots of choices.

Sundays

On Sundays the lunch menu sits alongside our Sunday roast, served from 12 noon with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and homemade gravy.

Oysters & Champagne in Muswell Hill

Because some evenings deserve a little sparkle.

Oysters on ice with lemon and shallot vinegar

Fresh oysters in N10

You do not need to head into central London for fresh oysters. At La Petite Colline we serve them on ice with shallot vinegar and lemon, just as you would find them in a Paris brasserie.

Choose half a dozen for £18.95 or a dozen for £34.95. They make a lovely starter to share, or a light supper with a glass of something sparkling.

Rock oysters or native oysters?

Maldon rock oysters come from the Essex coast. They are plump, clean and easy to love, which makes them a great choice if you are new to oysters.

Native oysters are the traditional British oyster. They have a flatter shell and a richer, more mineral flavour. Natives are traditionally enjoyed in the colder months, so ask the team what is best on the day.

How to enjoy an oyster

Add a few drops of lemon or a little shallot vinegar. Tip the oyster from the wide end of the shell, give it a chew or two to release the flavour, then sip the juices. That is all there is to it.

What to drink with oysters

Oysters and Champagne are a classic pairing. Our list includes Champagne Gremillet Brut, Pol Roger Brut Réserve and Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. A crisp Picpoul de Pinet, Chablis or Sancerre also works beautifully.

For something a little different, try a Kir Royale or a French 75 from our cocktail list.

A Guide to French Bistro Classics in Muswell Hill

From moules frites to croque monsieur, here is what to order at a French bistro.

Moules marinière on the table at La Petite Colline

Moules frites

Few dishes say French bistro quite like a steaming pot of mussels with a pile of crisp fries. At La Petite Colline we serve moules three ways. Moules marinière à la crème are cooked with onion, celery, herbs, white wine and cream. Moules à l’ail add plenty of garlic. Moules à la Provençale swap the cream for tomato, onion, celery and peppers.

Order them as a starter for £9.50, or as a main with French fries for £17.95. Keep a piece of bread back for the sauce at the bottom of the bowl.

Croque monsieur & croque madame

The croque monsieur is France’s answer to the toasted sandwich. Ours is layered with ham and creamy béchamel, topped with melted cheese and served with French fries. Add a fried egg on top and it becomes a croque madame.

It is one of the most popular dishes on our set lunch, which is served every day from 12pm to 5pm.

Coq au vin & bœuf bourguignon

These two slow-cooked classics come from Burgundy. Coq au vin is chicken braised in rich red wine with smoked lardons, mushrooms and root vegetables. Bœuf bourguignon is a deep, comforting beef stew. Both are perfect on a cold evening in Muswell Hill.

Escargots & soupe à l’oignon

If you have never tried snails, our escargots à l’alsacienne are a good place to start. They are served in their shells with garlic butter, parsley and lemon zest, with baguette for dipping.

Prefer something more familiar? Our soupe à l’oignon is a classic French onion soup with croutons and melted Gruyère.

Crêpes, tarte Tatin & crème brûlée

Always leave a little room. Our dessert menu has seven crêpes, from a simple lemon and sugar crêpe to a flamboyant crêpe Suzette with orange sauce and Grand Marnier. There is also tarte Tatin, a caramelised upside-down apple tart, plus a classic crème brûlée.

Where to try them in Muswell Hill

You will find every one of these dishes at La Petite Colline, our French bistro at 259 Muswell Hill Broadway, N10. We are open every day from 12 noon for lunch and dinner.
